BELLEWOOD ACRES

BelleWood Acres owner Dorie Belisle laughs with customer Norma Hewitson, left, on the opening day for the fall apple harvest season Friday August 27, 2010 near Bellingham. "Every year, I'm here," says Hewitson. Dorie Belisle said the apple crop is looking good, with the Gravenstein, Zester and Sansa varieties being picked this week. Dorie J. Belisle

Age: 61

Claim to fame: Co-owner with her husband, John, of BelleWood Acres, an apple-growing business that opened in 1995. "It is our delight to share the farm with our visitors," she says. "I love teaching about the miracle of growth and sharing real food. It is such a delight watching kids - big and little - enjoy a fresh apple or other products made from the apple."

What she does: She has been watershed project manager for the Tenmile Creek watershed for eight years. "I had so much fun helping folks improve their property and their creek," she says. "Together we planted over 10 miles of streams and grew over 100,000 trees to be given away so anyone could plant their creek. Together, we learned about creek care, best management practices for our property, septic care and a little history from stories from our elders."

She's also a board member of Whatcom Farm Friends and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association.

What's next: BelleWood Acres features three new products this fall: BelleWood Bubbly, a lightly carbonated non-alcoholic apple cider; a new line of jams, marinades and pickles; and fresh and hot BelleWood's Apple Cider Donuts.
