Walla Walla police are warning citizens to keep watch for phony money being passed around town.

Officers have received two reports from businesses over the weekend that received counterfeit $20 bills, said Officer Tim Bennett.

The fake bills appear to have been washed to make them look worn, he said. There is no security strip and the color doesn't change on the number 20 printed on the bill when it's held at different angles like it should.

Other law enforcement agencies in the area reportedly have also been called about counterfeit bills.

It's not just fake $20 bills that are circulating. Kennewick police have recently received reports about one counterfeit $20 bill, a fake $50 and seven counterfeit $100 bills, said Mike Blatman, crime prevention specialist.

Police advise merchants to scrutinize bills that appear weathered or don't have a security strip.
