The Whatcom Community College men's soccer team lost 3-1 against Chemeketa in the second round of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 12, at North Salem High School.
Chemeketa scored the first goal of the match in the 34th minute, but Whatcom's Nathan Reitz answered in the second half with the equalizing goal in the 51st.
Chemeketa's Felipe Heredia then scored two goals, first in the 65th, then again in the 80th, to pull away from the Orcas and secure the tournament victory.
"We had a great effort today," Whatcom coach Joel Grossman said in a phone interview. "They looked like a much different team than they were at the start of the season. They are a great team and we were in the game, just a few things didn't go our way."
The loss ended Whatcom's season. It defeated Columbia Basin 1-0 in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 9.
The Orcas were the No. 2 seed out of the NWAACC North Division. They went 8-7-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the division.
"I definitely think our season was very successful overall," Grossman said. "We turned into a machine at the end of the season. They knew that if they stuck to our game plan and just outworked teams we had a chance to win every game. I'm very proud of the way we were playing at the end of the season."
