Point guard Corinn Waltrip scored a game-high 17 points and forward Kristin Schramm had 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Western Washington University defeated host San Francisco State University, 64-50, in first-day action Friday, Nov. 11, at the California Collegiate Athletic Association/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Shootout in San Francisco.
It was the season opener for both schools.
SFSU was led by the 14 points of reserve Candyce Matthews.
WWU trailed by eight, 10-2, just over three minutes into the game and was still behind by six, 23-17, with 3:20 left in the first period. But the Vikings finished the half with a 10-4 run for a 27-27 tie at the intermission and opened the second half with a 13-2 run for a 40-29 lead with just under 16 minutes remaining in the contest.
SFSU never got closer than five after that and the Vikings' biggest lead was the final score.
Waltrip, who scored 10 points during those two WWU runs, also had six rebounds and four assists. She was 6 of 13 from the floor and 3 of 6 from three-point range.
WWU forward Erika Ramstead grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, and guard Erin Feeney scored nine points, hitting 3-of-7 3-pointers.
WWU meets UC San Diego, ranked No.13 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 and picked to win the CCAA title in the preseason coaches poll at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.
