Illegal drugs aren't supposed to be turned in at the West Richland police station's new prescription drug drop-box, but Chief Brian McElroy said officers will take them if someone wants to drop them off.

"The goal is to get illegal drugs off the street," he said.

Residents can turn in prescription drugs during business hours by putting them in the drop box without any questions asked.

Someone wanting to turn in illegal drugs likely will have to talk to an officer, but that will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

"We'll handle it with the intent of the person in mind," he said.
