Whatcom County crawling with Halloween events this weekend

Whatcom County will be crawling with Halloween events this weekend. Here's a sampler of what's happening:

Trick-or-Treating

SATURDAY, OCT. 29

Downtown Bellingham: Children and families can trick-or-treat downtown from 3 to 5 p.m., sponsored by Little Tiger Toys. More than 100 downtown businesses are participating. Maps are available at downtownBellingham.com and at the downtown Visitor Center, 1304 Cornwall Ave.

SUNDAY, OCT. 30

Ridgeway dorms: The dorms at Western Washington University's Ridgeway complex will be open 6 to 9 p.m. for trick-or-treaters age 4 to 12. Groups will be taken on 30-minute tours of themed locations, led by college students and staff. More than 100 kids participated last year.

MONDAY, OCT. 31

Fairhaven Business District: Children can trick-or-treat in the business district from 3 to 6 p.m.

Ferndale: Trick-or-treating for children in the business district will be 3 to 6 p.m.

Sunset Square: Costumed children can visit for Halloween fun from 3 to 5 p.m., but must be accompanied by an adult. Free bags and candy while supplies last. Details: ShopSunsetSquare.com.

Trunk or treat: There will be a large gathering from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Christ the King Community Church, 4173 Meridian St. The church is seeking volunteers to donate or hand out candy.

CANDY BUYBACK

Bellingham dentist Dr. Faith Bult is offering to buy back Halloween candy for $1 a pound, and will ship the bulk of it to troops overseas, along with toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss. Bring candy to her office, 405 32nd St., Suite 100, from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 3. Details: drfaithbult.com.

Haunted Houses

SATURDAY, OCT. 29 AND ON

Haunted Elks Lodge: Haunted house in the lower level of Bellingham Elks Lodge, 710 Samish Way. Starts 6 p.m. Saturday. $5. Benefits charity. Details: 360-733-3333.

"Lookout's Curse:" Haunted circus acts at Lookout Arts Quarry, 246 Old Highway 99 North Road. Runs each half hour from 7 to 11 p.m. through Oct. 31. Less-frightening tour 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday. A Freaky Dance Party begins 10 p.m., Monday. Tours: $13, or $10 with food bank donation. Children by donation. Details: LookoutArts.com.

Scream Fair: One ticket gains entry to four haunted houses at Northwest Washington Fair and Event Center. Enter via Gate 2, at 1775 Front St., 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday. $13. Details: screamfair.com.

SpookShop's Zombie Asylum: Zombie-theme haunted house at SpookShop, 3550 Meridian St. Not recommended for young children. Hours: 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 31. Kids' tour is 2 to 5 p.m. Halloween. $8 for adults, $4 children. Donations for Bellingham Food Bank accepted.

SATURDAY.OCT. 29

Vista and Horizon Middle schools benefit: Open to people of all ages, 5 to 9 p.m. at Vista Middle School, 6051 Vista Drive. $2, free for parents accompanying children. Details: 360-384-2729.

Dances, Theater, etc.

SATURDAY, OCT. 29

Family activity day: Crafts and festivities from noon to 4 p.m. at Whatcom Museum Lightcatcher building, 250 Flora St. Make skeleton masks, marionettes and scratch art.

Thrill the World: Third annual "Thriller" performance at 2 p.m. in Sunnyland Square. Other dance troupes around the world will be doing the same dance at the same time.

All-county Halloween high school dance: Students only, must show ASB card. Light show, fog and prizes. Costumes optional. Starts 9 p.m. at Bellingham Sportsplex, 1225 Civic Field Way. $10.

Barnes & Noble storytime: Special reading of "Goodnight Goon" at 11 a.m. at Barnes & Noble, 4099 Meridian St. Costumes recommended.

Halloween covers with WhAAM!: Bands will cover Misfits, Black Sabbath and The Ramones, starting 7:30 p.m. at Jinx Arts Space, 306 Flora St. Costumes recommended. All ages. $5.

Dia de los Muertos: The American Museum of Radio & Electricity, 1312 Bay St., opens its space at noon for people who want to build ofrendas. Dancing and music later in the day.

SUNDAY, OCT. 30

Halloween breakfast: Benefit breakfast for American Cancer Society, 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Willows Senior Living, 3115 Squalicum Parkway. $7. The Willows will also host a haunted house for young kids the same day. Details: 360-671-7077.

MONDAY, OCT. 31

Village Books storytellers: Ghoulish tales at Village Books, 1200 11th St., from 4 to 6 p.m., while trick-or-treating is happening.

"Pirates of Bootyham Dash:" Photo scavenger hunt benefits Marianne's House, an activity center for adults with developmental disabilities. Photographers must search for items downtown and document them on camera. Teams of two allowed. Fee: $5 per person. Must be 18 or older. Registration begins 5 p.m.; race starts at 6. Chuckanut Brewery costume contest: Special pint prices start 6 p.m. at Chuckanut Brewery, 601 W. Holly St. Costume contest at 9 p.m., before the dancing starts in Maritime Heritage Park.

Symphony benefit concert at WWU: Western Washington University Symphony Orchestra performs "Night on Bald Mountain" and other pieces at Performing Arts Center. Proceeds benefit WWU Music Library. Tickets: 360-650-6146.

"Thriller" at Bellingham Public Market: Zombie performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance at 8 p.m. at the Public Market, 1530 Cornwall Ave.

Thrillingham: Two performances of "Thriller" dance • 7:30 p.m. at 10th Street and Mill Avenue in Fairhaven, and 9 p.m. in Maritime Heritage Park, downtown.

Boo! At Bloedel: Candy-free carnival for preschool through second-grade students, 4 to 6 p.m. at Bloedel Donovan Community Building. Zombie bowling, worms on a string and face painting. Costumes recommended. $3, free for adults.

Horse-drawn hayrides: James' Place Child Development Center offers free hayrides 3 to 5 p.m. for children and families. The center is at 109 W. Champion St.

Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro costume contest: Live music with David Bowie tribute band Scary Monster and the Super Creeps. Music starts 9 p.m. $6 cover. First place in costume contest wins $100.
