BELLINGHAM — A man was rushed to the hospital after cutting off one of his arms with a homemade guillotine Thursday, Oct. 27, according to Bellingham police.

The man walked into a urology clinic in the 300 block of Birchwood Avenue at about 11:15 a.m., and staff called police when they saw that his right arm had been severed above the elbow, said police spokesman Mark Young.

The man, who police said may be a transient, was rushed to St. Joseph hospital as police officers searched the area around the clinic for his arm. Officers found the arm and an elaborate homemade guillotine in a transient camp in woods near the clinic. The arm was taken to the hospital in hopes that it could be reattached.

The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment. His name and condition were not made available Thursday afternoon.

Statements the man made to police indicated that the injury was self-inflicted, Young said.
