Whatcom County oozing with Halloween events

Whatcom County will be crawling with Halloween events for the next two weeks.

Here's a sampler of what's happening:

Trick or treating

Saturday, Oct. 29

Downtown Bellingham: Children and families invited to attend annual trick-or-treat downtown from 2 to 5 p.m., sponsored by Little Tiger Toys. More than 100 downtown businesses are participating. Maps available at DowntownBellingham.com and the downtown Visitor Center, 1304 Cornwall Ave.

Sunday, Oct. 30

Ridgeway Dorms: The dorms at Western Washington University's Ridgeway complex will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. for trick-or-treaters aged 4 to 12. Groups will be taken on 30-minute tours of themed locations, led by college students and staff. More than 100 kids participated last year.

Monday, Oct. 31

Fairhaven Business District: Trick-or-treat for children in the business district from 3 to 6 p.m.

Sunset Square: Halloween fun for costumed children from 3 to 5 p.m. Must be accompanied by an adult. Free bags and candy while supplies last. For more information, visit ShopSunsetSquare.com.

Haunted houses

Saturday, Oct. 22 and on

Haunted Elks Lodge: Haunted house in the lower level of the Bellingham Elks Lodge, 710 Samish Way. Starts at 6 p.m. Oct. 22, 23, 28 and 29. $5. Proceeds go to charity. For questions, call 360-733-3333.

"Lookout's Curse": Haunted circus acts at the Lookout Arts Quarry, 246 Old Highway 99 North Road. Runs each half hour from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday to Sunday, through Oct. 31. Less frightening tours are available Sundays from 6 to 10 p.m. Tours cost $13 or $10 with a food bank donation. Children are by donation. For more info, visit LookoutArts.com.

Scream Fair: One ticket for entry to four haunted houses at the Northwest Washington Fair and Event Center. Enter the fairgrounds from Gate 2 at 1775 Front St. Open 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Oct. 22, 23, 28 and 29. Also open from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Cost is $13. For info, visit screamfair.com.

SpookShop's Zombie Asylum: Zombie-themed haunted house at the SpookShop, 3550 Meridian St. Not recommended for young children. 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Also open 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 28 and 29; from 9 to 11 p.m. Oct. 30; and from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Oct. 31. Kids' tour is from 2 to 5 p.m. on Halloween. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $4 for children. Food donations for Bellingham Food Bank also will be accepted.

Thursday, Oct. 27

Haunted Forest at Nugents Corner: Walk the trails of the Nooksack River Access Park after dark. Starts at 7 p.m. Family friendly. Proceeds go to the Northwest Wildlife Rehab Center. Cost is $5. Call 360-421-4674 for info.

Friday, Oct. 28

BAAY Haunted House: The Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth will host a "ghoulishly delightful" haunted house at its campus, 1059 N. State St. Admission is $3; it's free for kids under 3 years old.

HOWLoween HOWLS: Free haunted maze from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Everson McBeath Library, 104 Kirsch Drive, hosted by Friends of the Everson Library. Prize for best costume. Limit of 15 middle and high school students. Must sign up in advance. Call 360-966-5100 for information.

Saturday, Oct. 29

Vista and Horizon Middle School Fundraiser: Open to the public from 5 to 9 p.m. at Vista Middle School, 6051 Vista Drive. $2 entry, free for parents accompanying children. Open to the public, all ages. Call 360-384-2729 for information.

Dances, theaters and other events

Saturday, Oct. 22

"The Bride of Brackenloch": Gothic theatrical spoof directed by Bellingham High School senior Veronica Hoelscher. Curtains at 7 p.m. at the BAAY Theatre, 1059 N. State St. $7; profits donated to BAAY.

Sunday, Oct. 23

Jazzy Jack-O-Lanterns: Pumpkin carving and painting at the Bloedel Donovan Community Building, 2214 Electric Ave. Bring your own pumpkin, but beverages and treats are available. Cost is $3, pre-registration recommended. Call 360-778-7000. Sponsored by Bellingham Parks and Recreation.

Tuesday, Oct. 25

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show": String of eight performances starts Tuesday, with live actors performing along with the film at the Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Wednesday, Oct. 26

Pumpkins on Parade: Bring a decorated pumpkin to the Sumas Library, 451 Second St., on Oct. 26 or 29, in exchange for a free "book buck" good for any book in the Sumas Friends of the Library used book nook. Pumpkins can be taken home at the end of the day Saturday.

Teen Halloween Crafts: Have a competition to see who can make the scariest craft from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Lynden Public Library, 216 Fourth St.

Friday, Oct. 28

All-County Middle School Halloween Dance: Costume suggested for professional DJ and light show at the Bellingham Boys & Girls Club, 1715 Kentucky St. Games and dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Cost is $3 at the door or three cans of food for the food bank. Proceeds go to local charities. After students enter, parents or guardians must give permission to leave.

Zombie Prom: Zombie-themed danced open to college students and the community, ages 18 and up. 9 p.m. at Syre Student Center on Whatcom Community College campus. Local community and technical college students pay $2, others pay $5.

Halloween Monster Mash: Treats, music and dancing at The Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St. "Thriller" Line Dance at 7 p.m. Hosted by the Bellingham Dance Company. $7 for students, seniors and military with ID; $10 for others.

Saturday, Oct. 29

Family Activity Day: Crafts and festivities from noon to 4 p.m. at the Whatcom Museum Lightcatcher Building, 250 Flora St. Make skeleton masks, marionettes and scratch art.

Thrill the World: Third annual "Thriller" performance at 2 p.m. in Sunnyland Square. Other dance troupes around the world will be doing the same dance at the same time.

All-County Halloween High School Dance: Students only, must show ASB card. Light show, fog and prizes. Costumes optional. Starts at 9 p.m. at the Bellingham Sportsplex, 1225 Civic Field Way. Tickets are $10.

Barnes & Noble Storytime: Special reading of "Goodnight Goon" at 11 a.m. in Barnes & Noble, 4099 Meridian St. Costumes recommended.

Halloween Covers with WhAAM!: Bands will cover Misfits, Black Sabbath and The Ramones tunes starting at 7:30 p.m. in Jinx Arts Space, 306 Flora St. Costumes recommended. All ages. $5.

Monday, Oct. 31

Village Books Storytellers: Ghoulish tales at Village Books, 1200 11th St., from 4 to 6 p.m., while trick-or-treating is happening.

"Pirates of Bootyham Dash": Photo scavenger hunt benefiting Marianne's House, an activity center for adults with developmental disabilities. Photographers must search for items downtown and document them on camera. Teams of two are allowed. Entry fee is $5 per person. Must be 18 or older. Chuckanut Brewery Costume Contest: Special pint prices start at 6 p.m. at Chuckanut Brewery, 601 W. Holly St. Costume contest at 9 p.m., before the dancing starts in Maritime Heritage Park.

Symphony Benefit Concert at WWU: The Western Washington University Symphony Orchestra will perform "Night on Bald Mountain" and several other pieces at the Performing Arts Center. Proceeds go to WWU's Music Library. For tickets, call 360-650-6146.

"Thriller" at the Public Market: Zombie performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance at 8 p.m. at the Public Market, 1530 Cornwall Ave.

Thrillingham: Two performances of "Thriller" dance - 7:30 p.m. at the corner of 10th and Mill streets in Fairhaven and 9 p.m. in Maritime Heritage Park in downtown Bellingham.

Boo! At Bloedel: Candy-free carnival for preschool through 2nd grade students from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bloedel Donovan Community Building. Zombie bowling, worms on a string and face painting. Costumes recommended. $3 for children, free for adults.
