Some of the state’s popular hunting seasons will get under way Saturday. That’s when hunters can take to the field for ducks, geese and deer.

Other hunting seasons opening in October include those for pheasant, quail, chukar and gray partridge.

Migratory waterfowl numbers are expected to be strong this year, said Dave Ware, game manager for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. The wet winter and spring really benefitted migratory waterfowl populations.

Early hunting opportunities will be focused on resident waterfowl, then turn to migratory birds as more start arriving in November, Ware said.

Big game hunts also look promising this fall, said Ware, who expects hunters’ success to be similar to last year. “Overall, hunters had a decent season for elk and deer last fall,” Ware said. “That should be the case this year as well.”

Hunting for black-tailed deer throughout District 11, covering Pierce and Thurston counties, should be similar to 2010. Branched antler, spike, doe and fawn ratios are stable to increasing over previous years, said biologist Michelle Tirhi.

Commercial and state timberlands remain the best opportunity for deer hunting. Hunters are encouraged to scout regenerating clear cuts. In particular, Vail Tree Farm (GMU 667) and Hancock Timber Resources Group ownership (Kapowsin Tree Farm in GMU 654 and Buckley and White River Tree Farms in GMU 653) continue to be worthy hunting areas for deer, Tirhi said.

Vail Tree Farm is open daily by boot, bike, or horse throughout the general deer and elk seasons.
