Rant: Speeding drivers imperil deer

It happened again today. A fawn was struck by a car on Cable Street. This area, long a known deer crossing, has become a slaughterhouse row. Although some of these encounters can't be avoided, folks who drive this route every day should know by now to keep an eagle eye out.

Drivers from Sudden Valley, the speed limit is 25 mph. Not 30, not 38, not 45 mph. Drivers coming down the hill, the speed limit is 25 mph. This is in effect the whole way down that hill, not just in front of the fire station.

One buck was hit so hard a few weeks ago that he was decapitated. Another large doe, involved in a hit-and-run last fall, dragged herself 20 yards toward the lake before she died. The county would be well advised to put a Deer Crossing sign near the bottom of Cable Street.

By the way, that fawn's name was Baby; her twin was hit earlier this summer.
