Here are 10 ways to help you get started on your fall financial “cleaning,” courtesy of the nation’s Financial Planning Association:

Write down your financial goals and start a budget to help get you there. Figure out how much money you need to save for retirement and other goals.

Evaluate your employee benefits and begin planning for open enrollment that is usually in November. Promise yourself to increase your 401k retirement account deduction, particularly if your company will add to your contribution.

Get your estate in order: Create or revise your and other estate-planning documents.

Create a holiday budget — and stick to it so you won’t overspend on gifts.

Balance your checkbook.

Start a savings account for a child or for a vacation or even a gift for yourself.

Teach your children how to save and spend wisely.

Pay off a credit card.

Establish an emergency fund.

Begin planning how you will pay for your children’s future college.
