BELLINGHAM - A 26-year-old Bellingham woman was assaulted, groped and then hospitalized early Sunday, Sept. 11, after two teenagers tried to rob her, police said.

The woman was walking alone on a dark trail between 21st Street and Douglas Avenue shortly after midnight when two young men in their mid- to late-teens approached her and demanded that she surrender her purse, said Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young.

She didn't have a purse, so they assaulted her, Young said. No property was stolen, but during the assault the woman was groped.

Police interviewed her in the emergency room at St. Joseph hospital, where she had been taken via private vehicle. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

A more detailed description of the attackers may be available after police further interview the victim.
