A 26-year-old Bellingham woman was in stable condition Saturday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being seriously injured while hiking Friday in the Racehorse Creek area south of Kendall.

The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office said Kaila Williams was hit by a log that she accidentally dislodged while on a trip to view a waterfall. She was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken pelvis, leg, ankle and foot.

A hiking companion called for help and about 20 volunteers from Bellingham Mountain Rescue and Whatcom County Fire Department No. 14 responded.

Rescuers called in a helicopter from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, which hoisted her from the accident scene in the dark and flew her to St. Joseph Hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Williams was then taken to Harborview for further treatment.
