PREP FOOTBALL: Sehome rolls past Lynden Christian

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDSeptember 2, 2011

LYNDEN - Without looking, try to name the only football team in the Northwest Conference that has a three-game win streak working. Would you believe it's the same team that went winless in 2009?

That's right, after wrapping up 2010 with two victories, the Sehome football team opened the 2011 season with a 34-14 non-classification victory over Lynden Christian, serving notice that the Mariners don't plan on being anybody's pushover this year.

Sure it's only early September, but the Mariners displayed an offensive attack that is sure to give defenses fits this season as they ran away with a 34-14 victory in non-classification action Friday, Sept. 2, at Lynden Christian.

Running backs Titi Lamositele and Eric Ho and quarterback Austin Rapp provided the Mariners a go-to formula of power, speed and agility that Sehome looks to utilize throughout the season.

"We're really excited to have the combination of all three of us this year," Rapp said. "Last year, we didn't have all our plays in, but this year we got to practicing early and went to work."

Before making the move to quarterback for Sehome's varsity squad, Rapp had played running back his whole life. It showed against Lynden Christian, as he ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, mostly out of a spread option look.

Lamositele provided the power, thundering for 75 yards and two touchdowns, and Ho utilized his speed to scamper for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

"We got a great set of kids this year," Sehome coach Darren Tinnerstet said. "Eric is so shifty and, man, he's fast. Titi is powerful and Rapp can break you down. Our O-line blocked really well tonight, too."

Sehome jumped out to a big lead early, and Lynden Christian wasn't able to recover. Rapp started the scoring with a 44-yard keeper and knifed his way through the Lyncs' defense for a touchdown. Ho sprinted across the line at the snap, and about half the Lynden Christian defense went with him before realizing it was Rapp who had the ball.

After Lynden Christian turned the ball over deep in its own territory on the ensuing possession, Ho got into the scoring mix. The speedy back took the ball around the left end and found the end zone from 20 yards out.

The Mariners extended the lead to 20-0 by the end of the first quarter and took a 27-0 lead late into the first half, until Lynden Christian manufactured an impressive 14-play scoring drive that started on the its own 28.

Caleb Park, who carried the ball 15 times for 63 yards, scored from 2 yards out to make the halftime score 27-7.

"We really dug ourselves into a deep hole early," said Lynden Christian coach Galen Kaemingk, who was coaching his first game for the Lyncs.

Despite losing the game, the biggest loss might have came from the injury sustained by 290 pound lineman Zach Scholten in the first half. Scholten is the anchor on the Lynden Christian line, and Kaemingk said the initial indication was that he injured his ACL.

In all, the night didn't go as Kaemingk planned in his first game leading the Lyncs.

"Issac (Reimer) had a good night tonight," Kaemingk said. "But we had too many penalties and had some tough injuries."

Reimer completed 10 passes for 123 yards.

Sehome has a big test next week when it hosts Burlington-Edison on Friday Sept. 9. Lynden Christian will travel to Lakewood for a non-conference game.
