Last February during my term as the vice president for the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, I had the privilege to assist Joel Pearson with Pearson's Athletics in the 43rd annual Birch Bay Marathon, which brings a very large economic boost to our community as well as supporting various athletic organizations in Whatcom County.

Unfortunately, there was an oversight in obtaining the permits and a real threat of the event being canceled. Since the individuals who approve such events were on vacation, I was greatly concerned.

I wrote to Barbara Brenner, who is an active advocate of Birch Bay and Whatcom County, for her assistance. She immediately responded by bringing the issue before the county executive's office, which in turn immediately assisted us in obtaining approval to carry on.

I would like to thank Brenner for her continued support and would like to urge everyone to recognize her as a true leader of our community by re-electing her to Whatcom County Council.
