After a more than four-hour standoff at a Peaceful Valley home, Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 20-year-old man early Monday, Aug. 29.
During the standoff, Dustin Fox paced in and out of the house swinging a machete, and later a sword, above his head, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks.
From 9 p.m. Sunday to past 1 a.m. Monday, about 20 deputies surrounded the house in the 6200 block of Limerick Road.
Fox's mother called 911 after her son, who appeared to have a mental illness, allegedly hit her in the forehead with the handle of a machete, wounding her badly, Parks said. She told deputies when Fox doesn't take his medication, he flies into rages. She had other signs of recent bruising on her face.
A negotiator was sent to the scene, and deputies were eventually able to convince Fox to come outside without a weapon, Parks said.
Fox was booked into jail on charges of second-degree domestic violence assault and given a mental health evaluation.
