BELLINGHAM - Long-standing efforts to preserve Chuckanut Ridge, also known as the 100 Acre Wood, will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 1, at Fairhaven Middle School.

The free musical celebration is 6 to 9 p.m. at 110 Park Ridge Road in Bellingham. It will include music by Dana Lyons, Linda Allen and others, as well as speakers.

The city has announced plans to buy Chuckanut Ridge for $8.23 million in a deal that is expected to close by Sept. 29.

On Aug. 15, the Bellingham City Council unanimously authorized Mayor Dan Pike to buy it from seller Washington Federal. The 82 acres on the south side would be added to the city's greenways.

People are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner. Ice cream and cake will be provided.
