REC NOTEBOOK: Bellingham golfer nearly wins Pacific Northwest amateur title

Evan Needham of Bellingham finished second at the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Public Links Championship on Sunday, Aug. 28, at The Links at Moses Pointe.

Needham lost to Stephen Hartnett of Boise, Idaho, on the first playoff hole when Hartnett made par. Needham held a two-stroke lead entering the 18th hole but made a bogey while Hartnett made a birdie to send the two into a playoff. Both shot a two-round rotal of 137 (7 under), six strokes ahead of the third-place golfer.

Morgan McGowan of Bellingham shot a two-day total of 155.

In the Senior Men's Amateur, Vince Crocker of Bellingham shot a two-round total of 153, good for a tie for 11th place. The winner was Bob Christensen of Post Falls, who shot a 135.

In the Women's Amateur, Karly Olsen of Bellingham shot a two-round total of 154, which placed her in eighth. The winner was Kate Hildahl of Tualatin, Ore., who shot a 143. Catherine Allen of Bellingham shot a 161 for a tie for 13th place.

SKATER WINS TWO ROLLER SKATING TITLES

Pat Shannon of Bellingham won two national roller skating titles in Fort Wayne, Ind. Shannon won the Premier Silver Men's Figure Event and the Veteran's Men's Event.

Shannon, 62, who started skating in 1957, has had 17 top-five finishes at nationals with three first places, one second place and four third places. Shannon is coached by Caroline Diewold of Ferndale.

YOUTH FOOTBALL TEAMS KICK OFF

Whatcom Youth Football kicked off its season with four games on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Ferndale Seniors team defeated Oak Harbor 21-6 while the Ferndale Juniors lost to the Oak Harbor Jaguars 6-0.

The Bellingham Seniors defeated Arlington Blue 32-8 and the Bellingham Juniors defeaed Arlington Blue 21-14.

LAKE PADDEN RELAY COMING UP

The 33rd annual Lake Padden Relay will be Saturday, Sept. 3, at East Lake Padden Park.

The relay will consist of four-person teams with each runner competing more than 2.59 miles and also a 10-mile run individual race.

Registration is 9 a.m. on Saturday and race time is 10 a.m.

GOLF TOURNAMENT IN BURLINGTON

The 16th annual Boys & Girls Club of Skagit County Golf Tournament will be Friday, Sept. 9, at Avalon Golf Course in Burlington.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Rick Graves, 70, had his first hole-in-one when he aced the No. 12 hole at Lake Padden Golf Course on Aug. 25. Graves used a 7-iron.
