More than 400 people raised more than $8,000 for Interfaith Coalition and Northwest Youth Services at a July 31 benefit concert at First Congregational Church of Bellingham, according to Margie Kimberley.

Visiting pianist Harry Huff, minister of music from Old South Congregational Church in Boston, and Kent French, singer and lead pastor of First Congregational Church of Bellingham, presented An Evening of Song, featuring music from composers ranging from Duke Ellington to George Gershwin to Billy Joel.

Donations will help provide housing and support for local homeless families and teens. Riannon Bardsley, executive director, says Northwest Youth Services will use the funds to assist with its Positive Adolescent Development Project. The capital campaign will renovate the upstairs of the 1020 N. State St. building to provide emergency housing and drop-in services to runaway and homeless youths aged 13-17. Young people will have access to laundry facilities, showers, food, and shelter once the project is complete.

FOOTBALL FAVORITE HELPS OUT FAMILY FRIEND

John Griffith, who, with his family, owns Griffith Furniture on Meridian Street, says he is lucky to have one of his oldest friends, Jake Locker, help them out with a new commercial.

The Tennessee Titans quarterback was a standout at the University of Washington and Ferndale High School and has some football fun in the spot that you can see online at at this YouTube page or catch it on local cable.

I'm betting we have a lot of Titan fans in Whatcom County this year.

RADIO FAVORITE RETURNS TO AIRWAVES

Whatcom residents who swear by the weather prognostications of Cliff Mass will be happy to hear the University of Washington professor of Atmospheric Sciences joins 88.5 KPLU Fridays at 9 a.m. starting Sept. 2.

BELLINGHAM COOK WINS FOSTER FARMS PRIZE

Tina Hoban of Bellingham was named one of two winners, from more than 2,000 entries, in the Aug. 12 Washington regional finals of the second annual Foster Farms Fresh Chicken Cooking Contest in Seattle. Tina's winning dish was "Chicken with Cherry Tapenade over Creamy Pancetta Polenta."

She won a $1,000 cash prize and will compete at the finals in person Sept. 30 at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, in California's Napa Valley. The grand prize winner, according to a press release, wins $10,000 and a one-year supply of Foster Farms chicken.

Ira Brill, director of communications for Foster Farms, said the winning recipes stood out from the competition with their inspired use of ingredients central to Washington cuisine (Hoban's recipe uses dried cherries). Check out the recipe and a video of her appearance on King 5's New Day Northwest at this Kitchen Monki webpage.
