TODAY’S FISHING REPORT

Whether you prefer trolling, still-fishing or dropping a line off the dock, the fish are biting at Spanaway Lake.

“They seem to be going into a fall feeding frenzy,” said Bud Herlitzka of the Spanaway Park Boat House.

Some anglers have even scored browns as long as 20 inches, Herlitzka said.

Herlitzka recommends still-fishing with PowerBait on either corner of the south end of the lake. Trolling with worms or flies works well too.

LAKES

American: Kokanee and perch are biting, according to the staff at Bill’s Boathouse.

Olympic Coast: Bob Gooding of Olympic Sporting Goods in Forks says most of the rivers are low and clear. “So you better get there early and you better be sneaky,” he said. Gooding suggests using bobbers and jogs. He’s hearing reports of fish being caught in most of the rivers but says the Sol Duc might be best.

Riffe: “The place to be,” according to a report filed this week by the staff at Fish Country Inc. in Ethel. Landlocked coho are biting from Mossyrock Dam to the fishing bridge. Fish are typically at a depth of 30-60 feet.

Tanwax: Rainbow Resort’s staff recommends using jigs and maggots to catch crappie and perch. Try plugs and worms to catch bass.

Offut: The fishing has been slow, washingtonlakes.com reports.

Mayfield: Bank anglers are starting to have luck catching trout.

Chelan: Try trolling at depths of 120 to 150 feet near the sandbar just out from the Mill Bay Launch, said Anton Jones of Darrell & Dad’s Family Guide Service. The fishing has been hot there for six weeks.

Washington: According to several reports, there isn’t much action here.

RIVERS

Puyallup: The action has been mostly slow, save for an occasional chinook, but some anglers are still managing to catch their limits according to washingtonlakes.com.

Columbia: Sockeye salmon fishing is heating up below Wells Dam, Jones said. Some fall chinook and coho are being caught near Buoy 10. More than 40 percent of the steelhead catch on the lower river occurred in the Gorge, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Cowlitz: Fish Country Inc. recommends pulling divers with coon shrimp or side-drifting with eggs at Blue Creek. Bank anglers should try fishing near Barrier Dam. Last week at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator, Tacoma Power recovered 35 spring-chinook adults, 31 jacks, 45 mini-jacks, 767 summer-run steelhead, three sea-run cutthroat and the first fall-chinook adult of the season.

Lewis: WDFW reports that 19 bank anglers kept four steelhead last week.

SALT WATER

Tacoma: According to the Point Defiance Boathouse Marina fishing is very good for pinks but pretty slow for chinook. For pinks, try fishing around Browns Point and Dash Point toward the mouth of the Puyallup River.

Today is the Puget Sound Anglers Salmon Derby. The event is $25. For more information call 253-591-5325.

South Sound: The action has been slow, but the staff at Zittel’s Johnson Point Marina says people are still catching fish near the mouth of the Nisqually River.

Ocean: According to the WDFW, anglers averaged 1.23 salmon per rod Aug. 1-7 in Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco). Coho made up 81 percent of the catch.
