Whatcom People: Local residents honored with scholarships, graduation, military advancement

Six Whatcom County students have received scholarships from Dordt College, in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Lynden: Joel Dotinga, Dordt Development Foundation and honors scholarships; Rachel Griess, vocal music and women's track scholarships; Austin Jager, piano music and presidential scholarships; JT Savery, vocal music scholarship; and Mark Steiger, presidential and theater arts scholarships.

Sumas: TJ Van Weerdhuizen, Adelene Haverhals Scholarship and honors and vocal music scholarships.

In other news:

• U.S. Air Force Airman Robert Curtis graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Willie Curtis of Bellingham, he is a 2010 graduate of Squalicum High School.

• Staff Sgt. Ian Willett has been promoted to the rank of sergeant first class in the U.S. Army. A 2001 graduate of Sehome High School, Willett has been stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., since 2009.

Willett has served two combat tours in Iraq, for which he received several commendations and medals. He currently leads a platoon stationed at a combat outpost east of Kabul, Afghanistan.

• Devlin Montfort has received a doctorate in civil engineering from Washington State University, Pullman. He graduated from Blaine High School in 2001.

• Two Whatcom County students - Anthony Cooper of Blaine High School and Kyann Flint of Squalicum High School - received a $1,000 scholarship from the Sisu Children's Fund of Bellingham. Both students plan to attend Western Washington University fall quarter 2011.
