Holiday Sugar Roll-Out Dough

Sally Burke Galletly of Bellingham says that years ago, her older brother's fourth grade class put together a recipe book. She said a boy named Victor submitted this cookie recipe, and her whole family has been making these cookies for Christmas ever since.

"It wouldn't be Christmas for us without them," she says. "That's been over 40 years now! I think what makes them special is the almond flavoring. This is for you, Victor Guevara!"

HOLIDAY SUGAR ROLL-OUT DOUGH

Ingredients for cookies

11/2 cups powdered sugar

1 cup margarine

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring

21/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Ingredients for frosting

1 cup powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Milk or water

Directions for cookies

Cream sugar and margarine.

Mix in egg and flavorings.

Stir dry ingredients together and blend into margarine mixture.

Refrigerate 2-3 hours.

Roll out dough to 3/16-inch thickness.

Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.

Bake at 375 degrees for 7-8 minutes.

Frost and decorate with sprinkles.

Directions for frosting

Mix sugar and vanilla with enough milk or water for the consistency you need to frost cookies.
