PREP FOOTBALL: Myhre scores late in Pioneers' win

October 9, 2010

LYNDEN — After an opening half that featured Nooksack Valley losing its starting quarterback, gaining just 60 yards of offense and a 7-0 deficit, the Pioneers learned that it’s not how you start, but how you finish.

Replacement quarterback Trevon Myhre put Nooksack Valley up 14-7 with just 20 seconds left in the game on a rush from the Lynden Christian 1-yard line, sealing the win for the Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 8, in a Northwest Conference 1A classification game.

Faced with third down at midfield, Myhre found Luke VanderVliet wide-open down the field on a 45-yard pass, placing the ball at LC’s 5-yard line with just 32 second in the game.

After two running plays, LC forced Nooksack Valley to another third down before Myhre found a hole on the right-side for the touch-down.

“We weren’t passing the ball well so we thought, ‘OK we want to run the ball,’ but we still got to get down to the end zone,” Nooksack Valley coach Robb Myhre said. “Then we had that big play on the slant.”

Myhre gained 171 of his 223 total yards of offense in the second half. Nooksack Valley ran the ball 23 times in the second half after Myhre struggled in the passing game the first half with three completions for 26 yards on 15 passing attempts.

“In the second half we just came out wanting to be more physical,” Myhre said. “We went into the locker room and said to each other ‘we’re soft’ and we came out and wanted to shove it down (LC’s) throat.”

Lynden Christian quarterback Joey Spoelstra completed just four of his 14 passes for 62 yards, while the running game was held to just 76 combined yards.

Nooksack quarterback Tyler Perry left the game in the first quarter after a 1-yard rush in the first quarter with what Robb Myhre said was a possible broken left leg.

Nooksack Valley (4-2 NWC, 2-1 NWC 1A) will play its next game against will play Friday Harbor at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Nooksack Valley, while Lynden Christian (2-4 NWC, 0-3 1A) will play Meridian.
