COMMUNITY SPORTS NOTEBOOK: BBST swims strong in Federal Way

The Bellingham Bay Swim Team finished 13th at the Pacific Northwest Swimming 14-and-Under Championships Dec. 11-13 in Federal Way.

The meet featured some of the fastest swimmers from more than 50 western Washington swim clubs. BBST sent 22 swimmers.

Twelve-year-old Cole Avery, who won three individual events, was selected to the Pacific Northwest Swimming All-Star Team, which is comprised of the top eight swimmers from western Washington in each age group. The all-star team will compete against similar teams from Oregon and California in a meet Jan. 9-10 in Cerritos, Calif.

In the 10-and-Under Boys' division, Shea Mielke, Sam Hunter, Zach Shenkin and Patrick Miksovsky finished 14th in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 200 freestyle relay. Shenkin also placed 16th in the 100 freestyle.

In the 11-12 Boys' division, Avery, Rowan King, Jonathan Hegeberg and Jonathan Chang finished 13th in the 200 medley relay. Avery also won the 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley and 50 backstroke and placed third in the 100 freestyle, second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 50 breaststroke. Chang also placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke, ninth in the 50 breaststroke and 13th in the 200 breaststroke.

In the 11-12 Girls' division, Gwen Roley, Audrey Shenkin, Olivia Nielsen and Hannah Holmgren finished ninth in the 200 medley relay and 13th in the 200 freestyle relay. Roley also placed seventh in the 1,650 freestyle, 14th in the 100 backstroke, 11th in the 50 backstroke and seventh in the 200 backstroke. Shenkin also placed 13th in the 100 freestyle, 13th in the 200 backstroke and 16th in the 200 breaststroke. Nielsen also placed seventh in the 200 butterfly, 14th in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 individual medley.

In the 13-14 Girls' division, Carlee Bock, Taylor Shewchuk, Josephine Hegeberg and Shirley Lam placed 14th in the 200 medley relay and 16th in the 200 freestyle relay. Bock also placed eighth in the 200 backstroke, 10th in the 100 backstroke, ninth in the 50 freestyle, 13th in the 200 individual medley, 16th in the 100 freestyle and 10th in the 500 freestyle.

In the 13-14 Boys' division, Alex Curtis, Gus Evans, Louis Hunter and Will Hutchinson finished 14th in the 200 medley relay. Curtis, Evans, Hunter and Andy Small finished 12th in the 200 freestyle relay. Curtis also placed sixth in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 200 freestyle, ninth in the 100 freestyle, 11th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 500 freestyle. Evans also placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 breaststroke. Small also placed seventh in the 200 individual medley and 13th in the 200 backstroke.

GYMNASTS COMPETE AT STATE

Gymnasts from the Gym Star Sports Center completed in the 2009 Fall State Championships on Dec. 5-6.

Gabi Gould won the state floor exercise championship with a 9.175.

Also competing at Level 4 were Emma Morgenthaler, Nika Talbert, Anneli Johnson, Rachel Porret and Jana Peterson.

Level 5 gymnasts were Ashlee Stiles, who finished fourth all-around, and Stephanie Johnson, who placed third on vault and in the floor exercise.

Gym Star Sports Center gymnasts are coached by Ben Carson and Holly Nelson.

LYNDEN TEAM TAKES TOURNEY TITLE

The Lynden boys' AAU basketball team won the 18th Annual Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament Dec. 12-13 in Mount Vernon.

Lynden beat the Washington Warriors and Marysville, before topping Anacortes 52-21 in the tournament championship game. Lynden outscored its opponents 163-75.

Next up for Lynden is the Whatcom Hoop Slam Dec. 19-20 at Meridian High School.

Team members are Connor Beard, Alex Crabtree, Noah King, Caden Lair, Tristan Moffat, Tore Olson, Blake Sandland, Sterling Somers, Logan Wainwright and Jordan Wittenberg. The Team is coached by Steve Somers, Jon King and Rick Lair.

Hole in one: Adam Sherwood hit a hole in one on Friday, Dec. 11, on the sixth hole at North Bellingham Golf Course. He used a 4-hybrid from 173 yards with Matt Gibboney as a witness.
