BELLINGHAM — Families in financial straits will have two chances to shop for discounted children’s gifts this week.
The Community Toy Store will be open from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 12, at Birchwood Elementary School, 3200 Pinewood Ave.
Parents can buy new toys, clothes and gift cards that are as much as 90 percent off the retail price.
Local churches, businesses and organizations donate the items. Sale proceeds go to two local nonprofit groups, Rebound of Whatcom County and The Whatcom Dream.
Program organizers said they want to help preserve the Christmas spirit and the dignity of parents as they go through tough times. More than $10,000 worth of toys has been donated, while 30 community partners and at least 250 volunteers have come together for the effort.
There will be child care and free gift wrapping on site.
