SILVERDALE - A trip to the Class 1B state tournament for the fifth straight year was on the line for the Lummi football team on Friday, Nov. 13, against Taholah in a Tri-District playoff game.

David James provided the answer on the first play of the game.

James' 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after an onside kick on the first play of the game sparked the Blackhawks to a 68-16 victory and another trip to the state tournament. Lummi (8-3) will play Wishkah next week at a time and date not yet determined.

James' quick score ignited a 42-point first quarter for Lummi and the game was later called at halftime.

"That was a great way to start," Lummi coach Jim Sandusky said in a phone interview.

Lummi's offense had several big plays in the opening quarter, led by Ty Jameson's three touchdown passes. Jameson found Eddy Williams for a 58-yard touchdown for the Blackhawks' second score of the game. Williams later scored on a 24-yard run for the team's third touchdown.

Jameson then threw touchdown passes to Eric Robinson (18 yards) and James (43 yards), and he also rushed for a 15-yard score to close out the 42-point first quarter.

"They came up with some big plays for some touchdowns," Sandusky said. "The offensive line blocked well."

Jameson finished the first half with 209 passing yards and Robinson had three catches for 104 yards.

Sandusky credited the team's defense for a strong game as well. Lummi recovered two turnovers and also had a blocked punt.

"We got to the ball very quick (in Taholah's backfield)," Sandusky said. "We had them in a lot of third-and-15 situations."

This is the fifth year in a row Lummi has reached the state tournament. Last year the Blackhawks were knocked out in the quarterfinals, and three years ago they advanced to the state title game.
