  As many of you know, Mrs. Marvin the famous sow, delivered 16 piglets at the Cargill/Nutrena Small Animal Experience during the 2011 Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden. We often are asked, "What is involved for piglet delivery at the fair?" We tell them the farrowing plan is long, precise, complicated, laborious, logistical and totally exciting!

  The plan began at the 2010 fair, her fifth fair, where Mrs. Marvin gave birth to 11 healthy piglets. Many things are taken into account for a fair delivery. The sow must be remain a gentle and friendly animal and enjoy people, especially young children. Safety for fair patrons, Mrs. Marvin, and her young are our biggest concern

  Piglet gestation is three months, three weeks, and three days. A mother sow typically nurses her young for six to eight weeks. She has an estrus cycle every 21 days. The planning is year-long and must be extremely precise in counting of days for each event to happen in a timely manner

  Steve and Denise Bruce of Bellingham announce the engagement of their daughter, Vanessa Bruce, to Lee Waldrep, son of Marvin and Sharon Waldrep of Smyrna, GA. Vanessa is a graduate of Bellingham High School and Pacific Lutheran University. She recently completed a dual Masters program for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Lee is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and The George Washington University. He works for Homeland Security in Washington, DC. The two met while studying abroad in Paris, France. The proposal took place at Mt. Baker ski area. The couple will tie the knot on September 10, 2011.

  Firefighters battled a garage fire Wednesday afternoon in Kennewick that displaced a family with seven children.

  The fire started about 3:45 p.m. in the home's attached garage at 1809 S. Rainier St.

  Kenneth and Melisa Stenersen and their seven children live in the home. The Stenersens smelled the smoke and called for help.

  Firefighters responded to a garage fire this afternoon in Kennewick that displaced a family with seven children.

  The fire started about 3:45 p.m. in the home’s attached garage at 1809 S. Rainier St.

  Kenneth and Melisa Stenersen and their seven children live in the home. The Stenersens smelled the smoke and called for help. They said they won’t be staying in the home tonight but do have a place to stay. No one was injured.
