  Older veterans can be caught off guard when the emotional impact of their war service resurfaces decades after they left the military.

  "Some of our veterans are finding that the stress of life is intensifying with age, as they begin to look back on their wartime experiences," says Bridget Cantrell, a Bellingham mental health counselor who specializes in treating veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. "The older veterans are at a point in their lives where they still don't understand why they get so anxious and feel as if they are unraveling, as if it were just yesterday in a war zone."

  The National Center for PTSD, part of the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, calls it "late-onset stress symptomatology." In other words, veterans who late in life try to make sense of their wartime service might experience symptoms similar to PTSD.

  Energy Northwest and four southwest Washington utilities have canceled the Radar Ridge wind power project, which had been proposed as the first major wind farm in Western Washington.

  Energy Northwest of Richland announced the decision Wednesday at a board meeting in Portland. About $4 million had been spent on the proposed project since 2007, about half of that from Energy Northwest.

  New restrictions proposed for the project by U.S. Fish and Wildlife were unreasonable, said Jack Baker, Energy Northwest vice president for energy business services.

  Police clear Occupy Bellingham camp, arrest 4 protesters

  BELLINGHAM - Police in riot gear cleared the Occupy Bellingham camp at Maritime Heritage Park, arresting three protesters who refused to leave and one who had moved his tent into the street Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 28.

  About 40 Occupy members were at the camp Wednesday morning as police lined up to start their slow sweep through the park to enforce an eviction notice issued the day before. Dozens of people watched from sidewalks, some shouting at the protesters and some shouting at the police, until the park was cleared at about 1 p.m.

  "I was heartbroken when the police in riot gear showed up. It was so unnecessary," said protester Tee King. "We have been nothing but peaceful and they know that."
