  The big silver fish were once the foundation of human existence on the shores of what is now Washington state, and the first human residents treated them with a reverence befitting their importance. Today, as the fish recover from decades of exploitation and environmental damage, most Whatcom County residents have rediscovered that original sense of reverence for salmon, and there's broad consensus that we must nurture the salmon that remain.

  Even in diminished numbers, salmon still provide an income for hundreds of local residents, Indian and non-Indian alike. Bellingham, once a major fishing port, is still home to a sizeable fleet, and so is Blaine. The industry continues to support shore jobs in processing plants and boatyards.

  The Austin Katayama Foundation will stage a silent auction this month in support of efforts to spread information about suicide.

  Katayama, 18, a senior at Richland High School, died Oct. 15 after jumping from a Benton County grain elevator.

  The auction will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Jan. 17 and from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Kennewick Library, 1620 S. Union St.

  As new members of the Lynden Music Festival committee and relative newcomers to the area, we were absolutely thrilled with the recent festival. From bluegrass to classical to blues to flamenco, the 22 concerts (most free) offered something for everyone.

  We are so fortunate to live in a community that has such dedicated citizens with vision as Tehri and Doug Broersma, Gaye Davis, Jacki Matter and Jamie Severson.

  I think we should all thank the Canadian shoppers who come down to Bellingham and Whatcom County and buy our goods. They are definitely contributing to our regional financial health in this dismal economy. Crowded aisles and scarce milk products are a small price to pay for bolstering our economy.
