SEATTLE - The Lummi Blackhawks took down Taholah on the strength of a 26-point first quarter to win 58-24 Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Nike CBA Football Classic in the Seattle Memorial Stadium.
The Blackhawks didn't waste any time executing their trademark big plays, returning the first punt of the game 52 yards for a touchdown.
Less than five minutes later, Lummi had gone up 26-0 and looked poised to end the game early with the 45-point mercy rule.
But Lummi, a team that lost five starters on both sides of the ball this year, didn't travel down to Seattle just to play one half, coach Jim Sandusky said. He instead wanted to give his young team some added experience.
"I wanted to get the young guys in there early enough instead of getting up by 40 and getting an accidental interception and taking it back and ending the game," Sandusky said.
And with two takeaways in the first quarter, the Blackhawks very well might have ended the game "accidentally."
Instead, Sandusky rotated in a lot of younger players on the defensive side of the ball and tested two quarterbacks with junior Joe Fryberg taking the majority of snaps in the first half and junior Ty Jameson relieving him in the second.
But there was one notable absence under center for the Blackhawks with Sandusky relegating senior David "Moon" James to wide receiver despite sticking him at quarterback during the first two games of the season.
"I wanted him back at receiver because he's a great receiver," Sandusky said. "He's got that sixth sense and knows what to do and where to be. He also helps the other guys when a guy is out of position and not sure what to do. He can be a captain out on the field."
James racked up three touchdowns, including an 88-yard reception in the first quarter and also pulled in the game's only interception. He finished the day with three receptions for 100 yards and one carry for 41 yards.
"I did better than I did at quarterback," James said. "I felt more comfortable (at wide receiver)."
At quarterback, Jameson and Fryberg both moved the ball at will in the air, with Fryberg completing 2 of 3 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and Jameson going 8 of 11 for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
The game gave both quarterbacks some much-needed experience at a position of uncertainty after Dustin Tom, who threw for 5,268 yards and 64 touchdowns, graduated last year.
However, Blackhawks special teams took much of the pressure off the quarterbacks by scoring four touchdowns, with the defense picking up another on an 80-yard fumble recovery for the score.
Their rushing attack wasn't bad either, punching in two touchdowns, with James carrying in one for 41 yards and Jeremy Roberts taking the other for 33.
"We needed a good rebound game from last week," Sandusky said. "We came out and we didn't really play very hard and didn't play with much emotion. I think we're a little bit more back on track."
