  Tommy Zabelka and Dallas Coble placed first and second, respectively, and led the Burlington-Edison boys' cross country team to a first-place finish in a Northwest Conference meet on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Northern State.

  PREP GIRLS' SOCCER: Trojans blank Lynden, end losing streak

  Taylor Lunde and Anna Pimento recorded a goal and an assist each and the Meridian girls' soccer team defeated Lynden 4-0 in a Northwest Conference match on Thursday, Sept. 15, at Bender Field.

  Lunde and Randi Donahue each had a goal in the first half, while Pimento and Sara Dougan added a pair of goals the first five minutes of the second half. Lynden had nine shots on goal for the match to Meridian's six, but were unable to capitalize on any.

  "We continue to not hit the mark," Lynden coach Joe Gonzalez said in a phone interview. "If we do we'll be able to compete well, we just can't seem to get into a groove. We are trying to grow and it's a process. We just have to get all our girls to buy into our system of play."

  PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Ferndale girls, Squalicum boys place first at Hovander Park meet

  The Ferndale girls' cross country team had four runners in the top eight to earn a victory over Lynden Christian and Squalicum on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Hovander Park.

  The Golden Eagles had a score of 36, LC scored 43 and the Storm finished with 51. Megan Morrison led Ferndale with a fourth-place finishing time of 20 minutes, 41 seconds.

  "They were marking some of the faster girls from the other teams and worked to where their placement got them the win," said Ferndale coach Nick Carlson, who added that he believed it was the girls' team's first victory in his six seasons. "We're getting our third and fourth runners kind of toward the front and getting them to where they could score and get the win."
