  If Matthew Aamot had it to do all over again, the only thing he'd do differently is run faster.

  Aamot was nearby when shots rang out on the last night of this summer's Northwest Washington Fair, injuring three people. When he saw a 15-year-old boy run by with a gun, Aamot chased him and pointed him out to a Lynden police officer, who arrested the youth.

  Aamot was one of nearly 20 people who received a Real Heroes award from the Mt. Baker chapter of the American Red Cross at a dinner Thursday night, Dec. 1. The awards honor people from Whatcom and Skagit counties who go beyond their duty to help save lives. Aamot received the Public Safety Hero award.

  BELLINGHAM - A 17-year-old boy was arrested for possession of stolen property Tuesday, Aug. 22, after a man spotted him riding a bike a couple blocks from where it had been stolen a few days earlier, police said.

  About 10:10 a.m., a 26-year-old Bellingham man called police to say he'd spotted his bike being ridden by a young man in downtown Bellingham, said police spokesman Mark Young. On Saturday, the man had reported the bike stolen near the Pickford Film Center on Bay Street. He'd used a cable lock to secure the $1,000 bike, but somebody had apparently cut the cable.

  The man gave a description of the rider, and police found him in the 1300 block of Railroad Avenue, Young said. When the boy was searched, police found he had brass knuckles, knives and a 30-inch bolt cutter. He also had a warrant for failure to appear for theft.

  BELLINGHAM - The person accused of beating and robbing a Bellingham teen about three weeks ago was booked into jail on his 18th birthday, Thursday morning, Sept. 8.

  Ricky Allen Jones, 18, allegedly punched the boy "many times" on Aug. 24, breaking his jaw, outside of a 7-Eleven at 2400 Alabama St., according to a court affidavit filed by prosecutors.

  Police recovered surveillance footage of the assault from a Little Caesar's Pizza next door, the affidavit says. It shows a young man, later identified as Jones, stealing a wallet and cell phone from the victim, and then punching him in the face repeatedly.

  Dick Stark, 77, has a four-decade career in broadcasting, mostly at 1170 KPUG AM and KAFE 104.1 FM, and says he had "great fun" broadcasting football and basketball games, including more than 40 years of Western Washington University games.

  "I just have a great love for basketball," he says. "I like everything about it, from the coaches to the players, the strategy and the fans."

  What he does: Stark helped start the Boys and Girls Club in Bellingham decades ago and is still involved with the organization. He's also active at Bellingham Bay Rotary Club, Bellingham Wheel and Keel club and Birchwood Presbyterian Church.
