  The Whatcom Community College Communication Club is making a difference locally as an active participant in the statewide "Thank First Responders Day," which was started by the Tacoma Pierce County Association of Realtors Outreach Committee on Nov. 30, 2009.

  The date was chosen, according to the club's press release, because it is the day after the shooting of five Lakewood police officers.

  The WCC club has been involved for the last two years, "adopting" the Ferndale Police Department in 2010 and Station 6 of the Bellingham Fire Department for 2011. This is the station that responds to calls that come from the college.

  Water is a common thread that runs throughout our community in Whatcom County, regardless of one's occupation, interests, faith or political perspective; it is essential to all aspects of our lives.

  The role of a clean and predictable water supply is essential to a functioning and healthy environment, yet its role in all aspects of the community - environment, economy and culture - is not always recognized.

  The Whatcom Watershed Information Network, a network of representatives from various organizations, agencies and businesses realized this disconnect and set out three years ago to begin planning an organized event that would encourage collaboration among active stakeholders in local water resource issues as well as involve the community in a focused way that celebrates and recognizes our interdependence with water and each other.

  Ken Richardson tells me that the folks from Home Depot spent time painting and fixing lighting at the Bellingham VFW Post 1585.

  "This was much needed work that will make it a more comfortable place for all of our veterans groups to meet and to socialize," Ken said. "Not enough can be said for the folks from Home Depot -- no breaks, no lunch, just work!" he added.

  Jeremy Davison, specialty assistant store manager for the Home Depot store on Telegraph Road, coordinated the volunteer workers, who included Mike Doggett, Jack Woods, Curtis Ewing, Cheri Hoskins, Chris Crawford and Nichelle McGonigal. "All of you at the VFW have done so much for our country that it is the least we could do to show our appreciation," Jeremy told the local post.

  Proving you’re never too young to help others, Tilly Melton, the 4-year-old daughter of Chris and Josie Mel-ton of Bellingham, recently presented $144.80 to the Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. She had asked guests at her birthday party to donate to help the animals instead of bringing her a gift.

  Her mom said they had been to another birthday party in the spring where the family asked people to bring a children’s book to donate to the library in lieu of gifts. “When we talked about Tilly’s birthday, we asked her if she would like to do something like that. She said she would like to help animals instead of get presents.”

  Friends and family pitched in and some kids raided their piggy banks to help.

  Big Brothers Big Sisters wins non-profit of the year award

  The Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry has chosen Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington as its 2011 Non-Profit of the Year.

  "This organization does so much for at risk youth in our community," said Ken Oplinger, president/CEO of the chamber, in a press release. "Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to providing an adult mentor for every child who needs one."
