  Now that the snowstorm is a soggy memory, it's time to warm up your pens and your hearts.

  Once again, The Bellingham Herald will run love poems written by Whatcom County residents in honor of Valentine's Day. It can be a poem you've written before, or a new creation. Either way, the deadline to submit one is Feb. 6. The poems will run in the Herald Feb. 13.

  Poems can be e-mailed to me at dean.kahn@bellinghamherald.com, or mailed to Valentine's Day poems, c/o The Bellingham Herald, 1155 N. State St., Bellingham, WA 98225. Or, if you're burning off holiday pounds, walk your poem down to the Herald business office in person.

  To mark Veterans Day, The Bellingham Herald will publish service-related photographs and stories from Whatcom County veterans.

  Sometimes numbers that appear gloomy actually conceal a glint of good cheer.

  An example: During the 2010 holiday season, people donated $57,326 to Extend a Hand, the charity sponsored by The Bellingham Herald to help needy people in Whatcom County.

  The money helps low-income residents keep their rental housing, through programs at the Opportunity Council, and helps people obtain medical prescriptions at Interfaith Community Health Center.

  In case you forgot, there's a birthday party today that you should attend.

  A public celebration for Jack Carver will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in Whatcom Museum's Lightcatcher building, 250 Grand Ave.

  Carver, who turns 94 on Monday, was a news photographer for The Bellingham Herald from 1945 to 1981. During those years, he captured more than 50,000 images of community life, images that, thankfully, are now part of the museum's photo collection.
