The Mount Baker girls wrestling team finished with the team title and two individual titles at the Kelso Invite on Saturday.

The Mountaineers entered the final round trailing Sedro-Woolley 105-94.5, but tallied 134 by the meets end to gain the championship. Every Baker wrestler won at least one match to help the team gain the title.

Ashlee Phy (140 pounds) and Angel Ortiz (160) both won individual championships for the Mounties, Roxanne Rosas was second at 103 and Kristen Sogg (119), Katie Newgard (125), Alex Lepper (135) and Chloe Grafwallner (285) all finished third.

At the beginning of the wrestling season, Mount Baker girls' wrestler Lacy Cannon knew the Mountaineers weren't a team loaded with experience, but with the performance the Baker girls turned in Saturday - the final day of the girls' sub regional tournament - Cannon could tell how much the team has grown over a period of two months.

"I know a lot of our girls are inexperienced, but we all have been working really hard, and it's showing," said Cannon, who beat Nooksack Valley's Chloe Gardner with a 12-5 decision in the 137 pound final. "It's nice to see all of our hard work pay off."

Cannon was one of many Mount Baker wrestlers who enjoyed success Saturday, as the Mountaineers ran away with the sub regional tournament title, scoring 297 points. Burlington-Edison finished in second place with 153 points. The next NWC team with the highest finish was Lynden, which ended up in a tie for fourth with 108 points. DEMING - Mount Baker coach Rob Gray doesn't have to remind his key seniors what the final eight games of a season can mean to anyone.

Even though the Mountaineers fell to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the Northwest Conference with an 84-46 loss to title contender Anacortes (9-3, 5-0) on Monday, Jan. 9, Gray feels Baker is far from finished as long as his boys feel the same way.

"We're one game out of fifth (in the 2A ranks, in which the fifth-place finisher gets a play-in game to the Northwest District Tournament) and we started 1-6 in the league two years ago," said the longtime coach, who has suffered three of the five league losses to teams unbeaten in the NWC. "We finished 7-6 with a six-game win streak and went on to take fifth at state."

Squalicum's Patrick Gibson finished second in the top division of the South Whidbey Invitational to lead the Storm boys' cross country team to a second-place showing in the meet, which was held on the same course where the Class 2A Northwest District meet will be held in less than two months.

Gibson covered the 5,000-meter distance in 15 minutes, 49.04 seconds, second only to Eisenhower's Santos Vargas (15:35.28). Mount Baker junior Dillon Quintana was fourth in 16:11.90, while Blaine's Tom Bradley also scored a top-10 finish (sixth) in 16:26.50.

Squalicum, which did not field a complete girls' team, also got a strong run from Brittany Gappa, who placed third in the top division with a time of 18:38.91. She finished behind Glacier Peak's Amy-Eloise Neale (17:48.63) and Katie Bianchini (18:22.73).
