OVERVIEW

The South Fork Valley is a winding stretch of river and two-lane road, pocket communities, forests and farms, and residents like it that way. Highway 9 south of Mount Baker Highway isnt the fast route to anywhere, but it does offer views of the Cascades, access to trails, pleasant stops at Everybodys Store and Acme General Store, and the way home, if you love peace and quiet in a rural setting.

Outdoor attractions abound, including bicycling, rafting, canoeing and kayaking, horseback trails on Stewart Mountain, walking trails on Blue and Bowman mountains, and hiking and view-gazing in Canyon Lake Community Forest.

HISTORY

Acme and Van Zandt live on as remnants of a group of towns that once clustered along the south fork of the Nooksack River. Prosperous towns that have since faded include Doran, Livewood, Saxon, Standard and Clipper.

Our first delivery from Acme Farms + Kitchen (AFK) arrived last week, and included an unexpected surprise. I had anticipated the beautiful, high quality organic food. I know some of the farms where the food was grown and they consistently produce nothing less than excellence. The big surprise was the packaging. AFK has taken "reduce, reuse, recycle" to new heights.

First of all, here's what I had ordered for the week: the large Locavore Box (including produce, bread, beef, chicken, cheese, eggs, yogurt, and pasta from various Whatcom and Skagit producers), 2 packages of sockeye salmon fillets (Lummi Island Wild), a package of frozen sliced green peppers (Moondance Farm, Acme), and apple cider from BelleWood Acres (Lynden). The box also included five dinner recipes using the box ingredients (plus a few pantry items). Salmon group and land trust to hold joint work party in Acme

ACME - The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association and Whatcom Land Trust are holding a work party on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, to improve salmon habitat along Landingstrip Creek, a tributary of the Nooksack River's south fork.

Volunteers will plant native trees and shrubs along the restoration site.

From Mount Baker Highway, travel south on Highway 9 for about 7 miles, then turn left onto Rothenbuhler Road, cross the railroad tracks and look for signs on the right.
