Kassy Geen, left, 15, and Amy Luke, 15, enjoy a cool jump into the Nooksack River at Everson's Riverside Park. The park also has fields for softball, baseball and soccer, and is where road bicyclists in the Ski to Sea Race meet their teams’ canoeists for the river portion of the seven-leg race.

Everson sits next to the Nooksack River 18 miles northeast of Bellingham. The city has more than 2,000 residents, with a small downtown core and relatively affordable housing. Low rent and housing costs contributed to a population boom in the 1980s and 1990s, although the pace has slackened.

Everson serves the surrounding farm families, and travelers seeking a scenic route to and from the U.S./Canada border. Attractions include City Park and Riverside Park, with Silver Lake Park and Mount Baker short drives away.

The Everson-Nooksack Summer Festival draws crowds every July, and the annual festival at nearby Cloud Mountain Farm features plants, music, fruit and wine tasting.

The riverfront town was named for Ever Everson, a settler who arrived in 1871 and homesteaded north of the Nooksack. When the railroad arrived in 1900, Everson quickly became a shipping center for the central county.

“I’ve got five children and raising a family in a small town is quite a bit easier. You have a better support group of parents, and there’s a lot of communication between school districts, parents and coaches.”
John Perry, Everson resident 10 years
