  Whatcom County has finished a project to improve stormwater and reduce flooding in the Lake Whatcom watershed, according to Whatcom County Public Works.

  The project, located in the Brownsville neighborhood north of the lake, involved installing vegetated swales, raising and widening a stream channel, stabilizing slopes and installing stormwater vaults. The improvements will clean stormwater entering Lake Whatcom and reduce flooding at an especially problematic stretch of Silver Beach Creek between Brownsville Drive and East 16th Place, according to Public Works.

  The project was finished under budget and on time, according to Public Works. It was done by Colacurcio Brothers Construction.

  BELLINGHAM - Asian clams have been found in Lake Whatcom, and their discovery has raised concerns that the non-native species could harm water quality, clog water-intake pipes, and stink up beaches as they accumulate and die off.

  City and county officials are surveying the lake to determine the extent of the infestation, and to figure out what to do about the invasive clams.

  That includes plans to send divers into the lake next week, and requests for lake residents to look for Asian clams in the shallow water and on beaches along their shoreline.

  I feel very grateful for having been able to spend winters in the Silver Beach area of Bellingham for the past 23 years. During that time I've been able to get out on foot, one way or another, very often. The past six winters, ever since I picked up this latest dog, who's even older (in dog years) than I am, I've just been ambling down to Bloedel Donovan Park, which is on Lake Whatcom, with the mutt.

  Charlie, this dog of mine, really enjoys Bloedel. He likes the other dogs and there are usually nice people there who give him treats.

  I do not think, though, that Bloedel is a very wholesome place for my dog (or any other living creature) due to the maintenance protocols used there by our city's parks department.

  But, oh, the trees he sees.

  BELLINGHAM — In fall 2007, when Dan Pike was running against Dan McShane for the open mayoral seat, eastern and northern Bellingham liked Pike.

  Not so much this time around. In the 2011 race, in which he ran for re-election against former Democratic state Rep. Kelli Linville, precincts in east and north Bellingham dropped their support for him, according to a new analysis of voting data .

  That was especially true in the Silver Beach area at the north end of Lake Whatcom. In 2007, that area strongly supported Pike. This year, it abandoned him and strongly supported his opponent.
