OVERVIEW
Situated between Columbia neighborhood and downtown, Lettered Streets was one of the first areas settled by Bellingham pioneers.
Many of the homes were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s for people working at a sawmill at the mouth of Whatcom Creek, now the site of Maritime Heritage Park.
With its mix of residential and commercial properties, Lettered Streets tends to attract single people and families on a budget. Many of the homes have been turned into duplexes or rentals.
HISTORY
The two-story house at 910 Bancroft St. was built in 1856 by Capt. George E. Pickett, a U.S. Army officer sent to build a fort near Bellingham to protect settlers from attacks by northern tribes.
The house was built with rough planks from the Whatcom Creek sawmill started by Henry Roeder and Russell Peabody, the first pioneer business in the area. The house is maintained by Daughters of the Pioneers.
