Pyramid Lake: Steady climb to deep lake

This root-covered and rock-strewn trail climbs steadily through the forest to a small, deep lake with views of Pyramid Peak. The dense underbrush, from salal to huckleberry, in this protected Research Natural Area is sure to keep aspiring naturalists occupied.

Difficulty: Moderate

Hiking time: 3 hours

Best times to hike: May to October

Family friendly: Young children may find it difficult.

Dogs: Must be on a leash

Amenities: No camping. Nearest restroom is at the Gorge Creek Overlook.

Current conditions: Several small trees have yet to be cleared from the trail. Call the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center in Newhalem at (206) 386-4495.

Permits: None required

Maps: Green Trails No. 48: Diablo Dam

Getting there: Take Interstate 5 south, exit to Highway 20 in Burlington. Follow Highway 20 east to North Cascades National Park. Soon after crossing the Gorge Lake bridge, you will see a sign on the right for Pyramid Lake trail. Drive time from Bellingham: 2 hours.

Parking: Park across the road from the trailhead.
