Choose your sweet and savory chocolate cake

August 2, 2007

As far as desserts go, nothing quite says celebration like a fat slice of chocolate cake. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or a Wednesday, the area has plenty of places to sate your sweet tooth. Though it didn’t quite make the listing, the deep, dark and lovely chocolate cake at Costco is a decadent surprise that shouldn’t be missed.

Colophon Café

1208 11th St.

Hours: Daily 9 a.m.-10 p.m.

There is no dearth of tasty chocolate desserts at the Colophon. For a classic, try the chocolate chunk cake, laced and topped with milk chocolate chips. Baker Allison Dustin also recommends the chocolate cheesecake, the white chocolate cheesecake and the flavor-packed peanut butter pie. If you’re on the go, try a brownie. Prices for a slice range from $5.25 to $5.75. Whole cakes usually require 24 hours notice and cost from $24.95 to $39.95.

La Vie en Rose

111 W. Holly St.

Hours: Daily 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

This downtown bakery offers a variety of chocolate cakes, though only one takes the cake: the chocolate chocolate cake, with four layers of thick chocolate buttercream frosting. For a fruity twist, try the black satin raspberry cake, a chocolate cake with raspberry layers, covered in ganache. Employee Nora Hughes also recommends the gateau mocha, a rich chocolate cake with espresso buttercream. The average price for a slice is $4, with whole cakes ranging from $20 to $30.

Mount Bakery

309 W. Champion St.

Hours: Monday to Friday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. They say black holes are dense, but that’s nothing compared to the chocolate truffle cake at Mount Bakery. The rich, fudgy cake is a crowd favorite that melts in your mouth, says employee Sasha Savoian. Mambo Italiano in Fairhaven serves up the cake for dessert with a crème anglaise to temper the unadulterated chocolate goodness. The cake is $4.25 per slice at the bakery, with whole cakes for $33.

Harborside Bistro

1 Bellwether Way

Hours: Lunch: daily 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; Dinner: Sunday to Thursday 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

Sumptuous chocolate so gooey they have to serve it in a cup. The Harborside Bistro’s falling chocolate cake is a sweet indulgence. The flourless chocolate cake has a molten center and is served with homemade whipped cream. Crack open the center and pour whipped cream in the middle for the perfect balance. The cake costs $5.95.
