Casual attire, quality dining not mutually exclusive

May 10, 2007

On sunny days spent lounging in shorts and flip-flops, dressing up for dinner out can be a chore. On these lazy days, casual dining can hit the spot.

Coconut Kenny’s

2220 James St.

647-9273

Hours: Monday to Friday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m.-8 p.m. For beachy eats try your hand at Coconut Kenny’s. Start your meal with a gooey order of cheeseball appetizers. Employee Brittney Mock says the most popular item is the barbecue killer pork sandwich and the longboard sandwich with pizza sauce, cheese and your choice of toppings. For pizza, the “big kahuna” is always a crowd pleaser, topped with pepperoni, ham, Italian and Portuguese sausages, bacon, mushrooms and olives. Wash it all down with a $6.99 microbrew pitcher. Pizza prices range from $5 to $18; sandwiches cost $6.59 for a full and $3.79 for a half.

Shrimp Shack

1200 Cornwall Ave.

752-9100

Hours: Monday to Saturday 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m., closed Sunday. For easy eats inspired by the sea, try the Shrimp Shack. Server Tiffany Easton recommends the halibut and chips, crab sandwich with Swiss cheese, and shrimp and chips as some of the restaurant’s most popular items. If you can’t stick to just one seafood item, the Captain’s Plate offers a little bit of everything. The average price for a meal is $8.

Win’s Drive-in

1315 12th St.

734-5226

Hours: Monday to Saturday 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Walk right up to this tiny burger joint in downtown Fairhaven and fulfill your fast-food craving. Win’s is an old stand-by for burgers, fries and shakes, so just break off the diet for a day and give them a try. The average price for a meal is $5.

The Nuthouse Grill

8874 Bender Road, Lynden

Hours: Monday to Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Down-home eats are the name of the game at Lynden’s Nuthouse Grill. Top it all off with a slice of sweet potato pie. Entrees usually average $8.95; prices for steaks range from $10.95 to $24.95.
