It is worth noting that the entirety of the projected $3.2 billion deficit that Washington state will face next year is equivalent to about 10 days worth of the occupation of Iraq, according to calculations by the National Priorities Project (www.costofwar.com).
It is worth noting that both Barack Obama and John McCain promise more than one full additional year of the occupation, with an open-ended commitment to occupy Afghanistan, at untold monetary cost to the U.S. taxpayer - not to mention the mounting toll of killed and injured U.S. soldiers and Afghan civilians.
Another useful term of comparison for the Washington's budget deficit is the recently-passed handout to the banking industry: $3.2 billion dollars is about one-200th of the $700 billion that were just handed out to the financial sector with the favorable vote of both candidates.
There are other reasons why Washington state voters should choose to vote for Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party for President in November - but her opposition to bailouts for bankers, open-ended military occupations, and her plans to redirect hundreds of billions in federal spending from missiles and warships to education and job creation are surely among the most compelling.
