The definition of smirk, from the Random House College Dictionary, is "to smile in an affected or offensively familiar way."
Arrogance is what I see behind the smirk and that's what clearly came through for me during the recent presidential debate - John McCain's arrogance. And yes, I find that affected and offensive, and deeply troubling combined with his repeated stance as a "maverick," as someone who stands apart from his associates. That is not someone who will build consensus. That is someone who I believe will follow the same disastrous policies of George W. Bush creating enemies around the globe rather than cultivating allies.
Have we not had enough already, eight years in fact, of smirking arrogance?
We need a president who will not go it alone, who will help us to reclaim America's honored place in the world.
We need a president who will not hack away at the root of our strength at home by catering to the wealthy and the corrupt while the rest of us sink towards poverty and while our planet declines perilously.
The difference between John McCain and Barack Obama is clear to me. It is the difference between a smirk and a smile. Between arrogance and honesty.
