Legislative changes in Bellingham and Whatcom County have slowed down the rate of degradation, but we believe they have failed miserably in saving Lake Whatcom.

The incremental measures have allowed politicians to feel good about themselves, but they have done nothing to improve our drinking water quality. This "incrementalism" has allowed degradation of our drinking water to worsen by allowing further development of larger and larger homes in our watershed.

Currently, in the city's portion of the watershed, homes up to 5,500 square feet in size are still allowed. We are hopeful that the city's moratorium will lead the mayor to propose a severe limit on the size of homes allowed in our watershed, as it is the last place we need new homes.

In 1950, the average home size in America was 1,000 square feet. If property owners want homes over 1,000 square feet, they should build them outside of our watershed. In these times of budget shortfalls, it is important to mention that this new measure won't cost taxpayers a dime. Perhaps the county will follow the city's example, as they are also trying to raise funds to pay the enormous cost of cleaning up our lake.
