Letter should have thanked military

I believe the author of the Aug. 19 letter about military recruiters at the fair meant to say "thank you" to the military for protecting my family and defending his rights of free speech, religion, peaceful assembly and to go where he chooses.

I am a Lynden High graduate, a farm boy who enlisted in the marines, served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division and am proud to have served for the writer's family and friends.

How did we get "Washington strong"? How do we stay that way? Because brave men and women step up to the plate.

Recruiters don't "sell war." That is left to the politicians, even if they make the wrong choice. Please don't blame the military for the decisions made by elected officials.

I participated in many fairs as a 4-H club member, and I don't remember any recruiters there. But I do remember the draft. Maybe the previous letter's author prefers that method of filling the ranks rather than volunteers.

Don't worry Lynden. I will gladly replace the revenue lost from the author's family and friends non-attendance next year.

A humble thank you to all who serve to protect the author's family and friends.
