Recruiting allows youth to make choice

The writer of the letter of Aug. 19 objecting to the presence of the U.S. Army at the Northwest Washington Fair sounds like a San Francisco transplant to me.

Do he and his friends believe that freedom and security are automatic? Thank God for the patriotic young people who are willing to do what the rest of us are unwilling or unable to do. Supporting the military is not being pro war, just as supporting the fire department is not pro house fire.

As for educating our youth, perhaps they should be taught that without the national strength a strong military provides, freedom to pursue an agricultural career would be an unfulfilled dream.

No, we shouldn't demonize the military and train children to put their heads in the sand, too. Teach them to admire those who safeguard our way of life.

Whether young people choose a military experience is their choice. But they should not be denied the opportunity and information to make the choice.

I applaud fair officials for allowing the Army and urge them to make this a regular occurrence. And to those of you in the military, be assured that the majority of the civilian population is proud of you.
