My wife and I just celebrated our 20th consecutive year attending the Northwest Washington Fair.
We have taken all of our grandchildren to the fair each and every year since their birth and plan to continue to do so into the future.
I took two of my grandsons into the U.S. Army recruiting display and had them both outfitted with dog tags, similar to the ones I wore some 40 years ago.
I was not offended by the presence of Army recruitment representatives at the fair. I was pleased to see that my grandsons were exposed to the concept of a volunteer military and I tried to discuss with them the obligations of citizenship. When the time comes they can, and will, make a freewill decision about the obligation of service to our society.
I was sorry to see the letter decrying the presence of an army recruitment vehicle. I wonder how the letter's author thinks we will defend ourselves in the future if we do not sustain a military. It is idle complaints that make political correctness a laughing stock to me and, I trust, to most of us who have served and do understand the obligations of citizenship which seem to be lost on the author.
