Having seen the photos of local proud guardsmen deploying overseas and the Opinion page cartoon of a puppeteering Vladimir Putin trampling the freely elected administration of the nation of Georgia, I then noticed a reader's letter expressing shame in our military. To quote, "We are Washington strong, not Army strong."
I am sure U.S. Army Capt. George E. Pickett would have been bemused by this letter as he and his small contingent of men built the antebellum Fort Bellingham that secured Washington as strong, then stood up to the British on San Juan Island to define the secure borders of this nation, which protects the peoples' rights to disparage the men and women in uniform.
I will indeed take the writer's suggestion and write to the Northwest Washington Fair. But I will be thanking them for being a part of defending and protecting this nation from all enemies, foreign or domestic.
