Recently a few of us riding on a WTA bus were talking about writing a petition to request later runs for those of us who work into the evening. The last bus inexplicably leaves downtown at 5:35 p.m. When we arrived downtown that morning we discovered in The Bellingham Herald that WTA administrators are considering reducing the number of bus runs and boosting fares. The reasons given make sense if we just look at our navel.
Our world is changing. our traditional transportation systems, weighted to gas-powered vehicles, is being crippled by a dwindling fuel supply, burgeoning vehicle sales globally, global warming, and human belligerence.
The public transit system in the Seattle metro area is developing a regional, three-county system. Whatcom and Skagit counties have begun a tentative two-county system.
Why aren't we planning a regional pub-lic transit system that blankets all of Western Washington? We would tie nicely into the wonderful transit systems in Portland to the south and greater the Vancouver regional district to the north.
It's going to happen. Let's do it now.
